A little recap
posted on 2010.07.27 21:49:17 6:00-7:15 Give it away give it away give it away give it away I'm back from a nice vacation, Estes Park-hiking and hanging w/ the awesome Thompson crew (Donovan, Jennifer, Tucker and Brody). Great world class people. Also, did some whitewater rafting and horseback riding. Then we were off to South Dakota-Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore, Cosmos, Cowboy Dinner, Custer State Park, Red Garter Saloon, Reptile Gardens, Wall Drug and the Badlands. I've been procrastinating on writing about the meet. Fellow Pound member Judy Drenth had an awesome pr shattering 9/9 performance. I somehow thought I could fake my way to a good total and do ok. Such was not the case, my body hasn't been with me for awhile and I thought I could flip the switch on meet day and make it magically appear. Didn't happen. I was called for depth on my first squat at 485, so I retook it and got it. Then I missed at 507. Pretty humbling since I went 496 then 529 then 540 just in January. I went 3/3 on the bench which would be significant if I wasn't 40 pounds below my pr. Deads went 580 601. and a miss at 628. That miss ultimately cost me the title because Ron Garafalo took advantage of it and completed a 633 to beat me. I was very happy for Ron, a great competitor, Masters World Champ, but more importantly one of the nicest guys one could meet. I was sorely disappointed in myself, but happy for Ron. What did I take from this? There is no switch to flip. If you don't/can't put in the training, it won't work out at this level. That's about all I can say. Where do I go from here? I am taking some time off, working on rehabbing my shoulder and groin, and working on my core. I did a bunch of that tonight. Then, when I am ready it will be all out for the RUM4. I can't pussyfoot the training, I need to get the body ready and then give it all I have for that meet. The aforementioned lyrics seem appropo for my feelings! |

Benching for meet
posted on 2010.07.12 22:13:38 6:00-7:00 there's no groove to your gloom Previous blog....crickets...I guess I'll have to work a lot harder for the $25:) Not much to say here-legs were sore didn't want to push it much for squats and dead. Did opener bench, Judy did opener bench 3x. The hay is in the barn Healing appointment tomorrow night...packing up the vehicle for Lisa and the girls on Wed. They are heading out Thurs. I fly out Fri morning, do a meet, then it's vacation in Estes Park and Rapid City. A little horseback riding, some whitewater rafting, some monuments, a little Badland and other stuff. |

The Decision
posted on 2010.07.09 20:35:31 6:00-7:30 Life's too short to be in a hole, so bust into your funkiest stroll I know some of you missed my webcast last evening. It seems that I was upstaged by someone else's announcement. However, let me recap it for those that missed it. As you know for months and months there has been rumor, innuendo, and speculation on what type of hotel room I was going to end up in in Denver for Raw Nationals. There were rumors that Elbie was making the trip. This was true at one point, however thru various meeting and negotiations it was decided he would not come to Denver. So, those that thought I was going to get a ground floor "pet friendly room", I'm sorry to disappoint. Also, I read the blogs and saw the tweets that mentioned my dad making the trip and perhaps he and I sharing a room. I want to point out that at no point during this process was he ever intending to join me in Denver. You can't believe everything you read. Also, it was reported that some buddies of mine might make the trip and we were going to get some kind of suite or at least a room w/ a small kitchenette. Again....unsubstantiated rumors. I think what I learned most during this process is that you can't always believe what you read. I had to take a long look at Tony Reid and decide what type of room Tony Reid needs and who would make Tony Reid most comfortable in a most trying situation. It was at this point I said, "Tony...your family is the most important thing in the world to you." I announced that I had to do what was best for my family. That's all that matters, it doesn't matter if you have a "pet friendly room" or a suite or a kitchenette. What is most important is my family. My family is what makes Tony Reid....Tony Reid. So, we are going to share a room in Denver w/ 2 queen sized beds. No questions will be taken at this time. I also squatted 485 a couple of times and benched up to 335. Tomorrow soccer tourney and parade. |

w/ Dad Judy Morgan and periodically Elbie 179.6 The Pound Pulls were flying... CHARGE THAT TO DA GAME!! Wanted to finish the deads on a good note. I pulled 580 easily jumped it 50 to 630 and it flew up. I have good mental confidence in that and called it right there. I know there was more left in the tank, I will let it percolate until meet day. Did bunches of bench, I need to work it out so I can at least get a respectable number there. I did the benches w/ double mini\'s added on. So, the 275+ the double mini\'s was probably up there in the 600+ pound range:) Finished off w/ lots of reps of push downs w/ purple bands and overhead extensions. w/ Dad Judy and Morgan 179lbs The Pound RTS is on Twitter and you can follow me on there too. So far I've done a test message and a response to RTS. I've been on for a few weeks and I plan to keep at this vigorous pace of tweeting. Deads felt good. A while back I missed 620 came back and got it 2 weeks later. Then I missed 640 and came back and got it 2 weeks later. Now I missed 660 and I am about 2 weeks from my meet. I probably should have missed at 900 come to think of it. A few weeks ago I missed at 620, then a couple weeks later I got 620 and missed 640. Today got 620 and 640 and it was nice and smooth. Then, I moved on to floor presses and they felt better (not great yet) than they have in a while. Finished off w/ lots of sets of band tricep pushdowns and face pulls. w/ Kayla 179.8lbs The Pound Stapled shut inside an outside world And I'm sealed in tight Bizarre but right at home Don't know quite what to do w/o my Sharks. Was planning to workout tomorrow. However, we forgot we are going to the Blues Traveler concert on Wednesday, so I did my workout tonight and will again tomorrow. Started out w/ Dumbbell Bench. Moved on to Rows. I took my big green bands and wrapped it around the squat rack and did 3x10. Then, I did my shoulder rehab work. Following that I moved on to some abs where I did hanging leg raises 2x10. After that I moved on to Peterson Step ups 2x15 on each leg. During my breaks I was timing Kayla on her handstands. She started gymnastics again tonight. Soccer ends-gymnastic starts for the girls-then the next 2 weeks is basketball camp-later they have tennis camp. Don't worry we'll keep pushing them in The Pound also. w/ Dad Judy Kayla and Elbie 180.2lbs The Pound Things are looking up. Had a good squat this morning, 520 was heavy, but manageable. I lacked the confidence to really let go and drive it, but I was able to muscle it up. Seems like the groin is healing up well, I just have to get it in my head to be more aggressive and not to worry. Sometimes that easier said than done. I'm still 5 weeks out, so I have some time to get it together. I'm not talkin' 'bout pleasure boatin' or day sailin'. I'm talkin' 'bout workin' for a livin'. I'm talkin' 'bout sharkin'! I know you are all looking for that final Shark update. Here goes...We played two tournament games on Thursday. We started out w/ our 4th draw of the season 1-1. Then, the Sharks came flying back to drub the other squad 4-0. Due to the scoring system, we knew this morning when we took the pitch we needed a win to advance. If we tied, we were done. The Sharks came out rarin' to go and got the much needed victory in an exciting 1-0 affair. We made it to the semi-finals and played Maradona again. This time we held her at bay, however we gave up a goal to another player and were unable to maneuver around Maradona and penetrate the net. Sharks lose 1-0. (Interestingly Maradona is never in need of rest and is able to play the entire game w/o ever substituting...while all of the other players are taken in and out continuously). So, was our dauber down at that point...NOT THE SHARKS-we came out in the 3rd place game and handled our business to the tune of 3-1. It was a very fun, exciting, and rewarding season! w/ Dad and Judy and Elbie popped in and out 180.4lbs The Pound Oh this young man has had a very trying rookie season, with the litigation, the notoriety, his subsequent deportation to Canada and that country's refusal to accept him, well, I guess that's more than most 38-year-olds can handle. But I persevered. Had a good dead. Last week I struggled w/ 620 and missed. This week I got it and struggled w/ 640, however, I felt better about 640 this week than I did about 620 last week. I do feel shame, seems like I've been in the box for quite awhile now. Today's RDL's felt good, tomorrow we go heavy on the deads and saturday heavy on the squats. I feel shame that my body is deserting me at the most inopportune time. However, I have some time left to get it fixed. Groin improving, will try to limp along w/ the shoulder and hit it hard the last few weeks. I also threw in dumbbell bench 35x8 40x8 50x8 60x8 70x8 Then I hit the rehab stuff on my shoulders. w/ Dad and Judy and Elbie 178.6lbs The Pound How much you wanna make a bet I can throw a football over them mountains?... Yeah... Coach woulda put me in fourth quarter, we would've been state champions. No doubt. No doubt in my mind. Squats felt heavy today, but I was able to push well so it wasn't bad at all. I followed up w/ some good mornings, got a good stretch on those. I then went and did my shoulder rehab exercises. On the pitch the had another stalemate. That concludes or regular season, we finished 1-1-3. Thursday starts the tournament, we have 2 games and then 2 more on Saturday and hopefully qualify for the 3rd place or championship game. We have 11 players and 9 of them played at least a half game in goal and in every game the girls rotated and played forward and defense. Now we get down to brass tacks and start putting together a more concrete lineup to try to take the tourney. No more mister nice guy, now I go from Mr. Rogers to Bobby Knight.
