bigger meals slow down your metabolism so focus on atleast 3 huge meals per day plus snacks. stick to calorie dense foods such as red meats, nuts, fats. your kind of lucky so have fun eating. Sauces are your friend. stick away from food that goes threw you quickly such as white pasta or breads unless if they are part of a meal. I wouldnt jump into it all at ones but slowly. Its a little bit hard to give advice without knowing what your eating is like right now. if you post a tipical day I am sure many people can help you out even better. |

Good point i didnt think to put that in there, sorry. I eat a bunch of small meal kind of like nit picking. In the morning for breakfast i eat two eggs bread biscuits gravy maybe bacon. then i leave and go to the gym and work out for an hour or two. After that I might stop and get something at drive true something fast easy on the way. when i get to work i just munch on stuff thruw out the day, like piece pizza, hot dog, hamburger, pork rib, steak rolls. Whatever looks good and fast to eat. After work i go home i will eat a meal later on in the afternoon like a meat of some sort, sides like corn, green bean, spinach, mac and cheese some kind of bread. Somethings may very depending on what sounds good. Also on somedays i work out 2 time a day once in the morning and once in the after noon. Let me know if thats not enough info and ill send more. thanks, john

so basically your just not eating enough...its that simple. up your portions and you might wanna watch out with all the fast food and junk food. just because you dont gain fat doesnt mean the arteries arent getting cloged from the saturated fats. Try to stick to healthy fatty foods. that link that was posted really makes it simple which is what it is really. |

For the most part, I agree. If you can't gain weight, you're not eating enough -- this is true regardless of how much you are currently eating. I'm going through the same thing right now. I currently weight about 263 or so. I'd like to fill my weight class (and not be a fat slob) at 275. Getting there requires discipline. It's tough, but as they say: "Of course it's hard. If it was easy everyone would do it. Being hard is what makes it great." |

Hey
Everyone thanks for the insight. That doesn't sound to bad just got to stick to it. I'm going keep in touch and let you know how it works out. One other thing is weight gain supplements. Could I use that to help or not.
Thanks,john |

I'd say, use gainers only after meals as a sort of dessert. In my opinion you shouldn't snack so much in between meals because that'll probably only curb your apetite. |

Try adding in a big shake at the end of the day, close to bedtime, and after you've eaten all your regular food. Whole milk, 50 grams of your favorite protein powder, some peanut butter, a banana, and olive oil or flaxseed oil. Start with 1 tablespoon of the oil. This is pretty healthy (no heavy dose of sugar), and high in calories. Play around for a week to get your recipe down so that you like it, and then drink 1/day consistently for a month. Take stock of where you're at after that month. |

Good suggestions all around. You just need more calories. And for goodness sake, try to make them good calories! Not burgers and hotdogs and fast food! I'm a little biased, I'm a Registered Dietitian. You can gain weight with good food. Start eating several tablespoons of some kind of peanut or nut butter with meals, chow down on cottage cheese, and simply eat bigger meals. I've found that simply eating bigger, more calorically dense meals is the best route. Worrying about packing around lots of extra snacks can be difficult if you have a busy job, its hard to get in extra small meals. Despite "common" knowledge, grazing does not "ramp up" your metabolism, nor does eating 3 or 4 larger meals a day "slow down" your metabolism. Your stomach doesn't empy in a matter of minutes so a good meal will take hours to make its way through the body. A weight gain shake with added fruit, olive oil, etc. adds a ton of calories but its still nutritious. No need to sacrifice health while gaining. |

Here's a bit of a thread-hijack, but do you know of ways of eating that can affect your metabolism? Say if you ate one particular way, then switched to another, would you notice an effect on metabolism?

AFAIK no. Unless you fast for a lot of days, there's not so much you can do about your metabolism. And I doubt you are gonna fast

By all means, don't do what any of us say if it doesn't seem to work for you. If six small meals works, do it. Either way, gaining weight is a LONG process. If it happens overnight (not literally, but you get the point), you are most likely: 1) Getting fat 2) Taking anabolics. Your weight can vary quite a bit during the day and over a period of days depending on simple hydration. It took me two years of stop and start to get from 165 to 187 pounds. TWO years. And that was training my ass off day in day out. For the most part, I was just focused on getting stronger and eating a little more each day. Give it time and gauge your progress by your lifts and appearance (if thats what you are concerned about).

More stuff I just recalled: You can gain up to one pound/week. If you are doing things right it'll be about 50-50 in terms of muscle and fat. Slower gains mean probably a better proportion. Also, if you are increasing strength that is the best measuring stick of how much muscle you are gaining. If you put 10 lbs bw and 10 lbs on the bp, then a big bit of it is gonna be fat. If you put on 10 lbs and 50 lbs on the bp, then be sure that most of it is gonna be muskles. Cheers |

I believe that the amount you can gain per week varies greatly; a novice might hit 1lb a week, with 1/2lb of muscle. An advanced trainee will not come close to hitting that - IIRC, the numbers are at best 25% of that for an advanced trainee. Think about it this way: if a trainee could gain 1/2lb /wk of muscle, year in and year out, that would be 25lb of muscle per year, or 100lbs in 4 years, 200lbs in 8 years...that just ain't reality. |

Yeah, it was about a begginer. You wont gain much more than 50 lbs of muscle mass naturally, so that doesn't really happen. | Year of Proper Training | Potential Rate of Muscle Gain per Year | | 1 | 20-25 pounds (2 pounds per month) | | 2 | 10-12 pounds (1 pound per month) | | 3 | 5-6 pounds (0.5 pound per month) | | 4+ | 2-3 pounds (not worth calculating) |

I've put on 13 lbs since December 12th. A healthy mixture of fat, water and muscle in there too hopefully. All I've been doing is drinking a litre of whole milk a day with my normal eating plus a bit extra on Christmas day and around that general time. I also went down 16lbs in a month before for a competition though... I think my ability to manipulate bodyweight so quickly is due to the amount of water my body is capable of holding. I should think if I dried out now I probably would find some of those 13lbs I've put on missing. Either way, milk seems to work for me. |
